Rodrigo Bañuelos named 2023 SIAM Fellow

04-20-2023

Rodrigo Bañuelos, professor of mathematics, was named a 2023 fellow by the Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics (SIAM). He was recognized for pioneering and fundamental contributions in probability theory and analysis, and for fostering diversity in mathematics and education.

Fellows are recognized by their peers for their research contributions to the discipline and outstanding community service. Through their various contributions, SIAM Fellows help advance the fields of applied mathematics and computational science.

Professor Bañuelos' research is at the interface of probability and various areas of analysis, including harmonic analysis, PDE, and spectral theory. He says, “These three areas of mathematics are rich with many beautiful unsolved problems that are often quite easy to state but very difficult to solve.” His scholarship has been recognized with the NSF Presidential Young Investigator Award in 1989 and the 2004 Blackwell-Tapia Prize in Mathematical Sciences. He is a Fellow of the Institute of Mathematical Statistics (IMS), the Association for Women in Mathematics (AWM) and the American Mathematical Society (AMS).

Professor Bañuelos is the recipient of the 2022 Award for Distinguished Public service by the American Mathematical Society. This award, given every 2 years, recognizes a research mathematician who has also made recent or sustained distinguished contributions to the mathematics profession through public service. "The honor recognizes his exceptional service to the profession, his extensive educational and professional mentoring, and his prolific activities that have advanced diversity, equity, and inclusion at all levels of the mathematical sciences community.”

Professor Bañuelos is a life member of the Society for Advancement of Chicanos and Native Americans in Science (SACNAS) and received the 2017 Martin Luther King, Jr. Dreamer Award from Purdue University.
